Joel and his brother Ethan have helmed a string of hit movies including No Country for Old Men and Fargo. They received their first Academy Award in 2007 for Fargo and Joel has revealed the movie industry has changed a great deal since then.

"I don't recall doing a single thing in connection with that," Joel said in an interview with British newspaper The Independent. "It was just a different time to a certain extent, in terms of the whole craziness of it. I don't believe we did a single interview or went to a single Guild thing or lunch thing or any of the rest of it. It's changed very much and I think it's all become a little crazy."

Their latest big screen outing, True Grit, has received an impressive ten Oscar nominations this year including nods for best director, best picture and best screenplay. The stars of the film, Jeff Bridges and Hailee Steinfeld, are also up for best actor and best supporting actress respectively.

Ethan and Joel insist they were happy to be regarded as outsiders in the movie business for years, after developing a reputation for creating offbeat films. Even though they are now winning prestigious awards, they find it odd to be embraced by the industry.

"Yes it does... is the short answer to your question," Joel replied when asked if it feels strange to be recognised for their work. "It's horrifying in a way."

"We're the man now," Ethan laughingly added. (C) Cover Media
