John Malkovich defends Bay

5th October 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - John Malkovich thinks that Michael Bays fiery reputation is utterly unwarranted.

The Transformers 3 star said the Hollywood director, known for his strict attitude on set, was very creative and he doesnt understand the speculation that Bay was hard to work with.

Instead John, who also has directorial experience, said that he found similarities in the way he and Michael worked.

"I found Michael delightful," he told MTV. "I found him fun, filled with ideas, many of them different than the take before, which I'm perfectly used to because that's how I work anyway. I found his reputation, at least in my case, my experience, utterly unwarranted. But what do I know? Maybe he's changed."

Michael likes to shoot films quickly and his crew often work more than 12 hour days. But a business-like atmosphere and attitude are what is needed to bring a big blockbuster like Transformers 3 to life without the budget spinning out of control.

John intimated that people who help Michael to relay an idea in his head into reality are more likely to get on well with him.

"I think with all the pre-planning and all the pre-production and all the storyboards and all the meetings, [Michael is] a filmmaker, so the film is really in his head," he said. "I think there are two kinds of people, then, who show up to work, whether they be actors or people on the crew: Either you're trying to help him define and communicate what's in his head, or you're not or you're just there eating craft services."

John - who has also appeared in The Killing Fields and Changeling - went on to give an insight into Michaels softer side.

On the Transformers 3 set, he was apparently very nurturing of new actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

"I thought he was very good with [Rosie], very patient, very pleasant and helpful," John added. "For her, that's a strain, if you've never done that before." (C) Cover Media
