Lemmy recalls the Sid Vicious sneer

16th December 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Lemmy says Sid Vicious only talent was being able to sneer.

The Motrhead lead singer has been in the music industry for more than 40 years and as a result has a few interesting anecdotes to reveal. The rock musician believes his experience means he can separate great musicians from merely good ones, putting Sid into the latter category.

Lemmy believes that the former Sex Pistols singer lacked skill in the bass department, excelling only when forced to portray his flamboyant character.

He had no aptitude for the bass, whatsoever. Im not the greatest bass player, I know that, but he didnt play it, he hit it. He might as well have been playing f**king air guitar with a broom. Steve [Jones] played bass on the records, or Glen Matlock. Sid Vicious held an honorary position in the Sex Pistols. He played his own face. That sneer, that was his instrument, he told Q magazine.

Lemmy and Sid were acquainted during their time as singers struggling to make the initial breakthrough into the industry. Lemmy remembers those days well and says the two groups should have been more hostile to each other than they actually were.

I got to know Sid because we all hung out at the place places The Embassy Club, The Roxy. Neither band could get a gig. We should have been enemies because the punks and the longhairs were not supposed to see eye to eye, and they did used to beat the sh*t out of each other a lot, but Motrhead appealed to the punks too because of the aggression in the music, he added.

The veteran rocker also confirmed the varied fan base the group had in the 70s. Lemmy is proud to say the groups fanbase went against the popular rock star conventions at the time.

We even had gay fans. There was one guy who came to our gigs and went home on the Tube wearing a ballerina tutu and hobnail boots. I used to think I was fairly bold. Id never have the bottle to do that. Not in the 70s, he concluded. (C) Cover Media
