(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Michael J. Fox's return to a regular TV role has been confirmed, after NBC picked up his new show.

The untitled comedy show is loosely based on his life and has been commissioned for 22 episodes. Michael will play a father-of-three living in New York City and dealing with family, career and health problems. His character will also have Parkinson's disease.

The star is thrilled to be returning to NBC, where he first found fame in 80s show Family Ties.

"I'm extremely pleased to be back at NBC with a great creative team and a great show," the award winning actor said in a statement. "Bob Greenblatt and all the folks at the network have given me a warm welcome home, and I'm excited to get to work."

The new sitcom is scheduled to begin filming later this year, and will make its debut in autumn 2013.

NBC are confident the show will be a huge hit.

"To bring Michael J. Fox back to NBC is a supreme honour and we are thrilled that one of the great comedic television stars is coming home again," Robert Greenblatt, Chairman of NBC Entertainment, said on Monday. "From the moment we met with Michael to hear his unique point of view about this new show, we were completely captivated and on board. He is utterly relatable, optimistic, and in a class by himself, and I have no doubt that the character he will create... will be both recognisable and hilarious."

Several US broadcast networks were eager to take the show, but NBC proved successful after offering an on-air full season deal.

Michael decided to semi-retire from acting over a decade ago due to his Parkinson's disease. However, in recent years he has made a return to the small screen after a new drug helped him control his symptoms.

The 51-year-old has enjoyed success following recent guest roles in Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Good Wife, garnering two Emmy nominations this year for his performances. (C) Cover Media
