Director: Elred Kumar

Ratings: 2.5/5

Old wine brewed fine

Right from the days of Kamal Haasan's Guna we have been seeing on screen male lover with a troubled mind. Elred Kumar, in his maiden venture as director, has followed the path of Guna, Kudaikkul Mazhai and Kadhalil Vizhundhen.

But he has banked heavily on the making. A producer that he is with some grand ventures behind his name (Vinnai Thandi Varuvaya, Ko), Kumar has invested a lot of money in Muppozhdhum Un Karpanaigal. But one area that he has apparently failed to invest in is a coherent screenplay.

With the story already confusing the viewers, the screenplay adds more confusion to it. But there are three important things which save the film, which has Atharva and Amala Paul in lead roles, from falling flat. They are: Sakthi's cinematography, G V Prakash Kumar's music, and rich production values. Camerawork by Sakthi and songs, especially the background score by G V Prakash are pillars of strength to the director.

As far as the story is concerned, it is about Ram (Atharva), who is a techie in Chennai. He works hard throughout the week, only to spend the weekend with his ladylove Charu (Amala) in Bangalore. One day, his company's CEO comes from the United States and she is, Latha (Amala Paul). Confused? Well, the unraveling of mysteries start from here and when the film ends, we get to know who is who and what is wrong with whom.

Atharva has graduated. He is no more the same struggling actor of Bana Kathadi. Be it romance or stunt scenes, he shines bright. Amala Paul proves that she can act well. And she is glamorous too. Jayaprakash plays a psychiatrist while the cast includes Nasser, Santhanam and Anupama.

On the whole, Muppozhudhum Un Karpanaigal is a journey that starts-off well, but is only half done. If you have a couple of hours to kill, you can watch this film for its grand romantic scenes and nice songs.
