(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Naomie Harris decided to star in her latest movie as she was desperate for her passion to be reignited.
The actress plays a teacher called Jane in The First Grader. The movie is based on the true story of a teacher whose fight to allow an 84-year-old to be educated caused great upset in all areas of her life.
Naomie was blown away when she read the script, and says it made her realise why she got into the industry in the first place. I wanted to go back and do something really small, really intimate, where I felt like I could be part of the creative process. And meeting a director like Justin Chadwick, who's always allowing you to contribute that's really liberating, she told the Los Angeles Times. I wanted my passion to be re-ignited, and that's definitely what happened on this piece.
After agreeing to the part, Naomie admits having some reservations. She speaks in a Kenyan accent throughout, and was worried she hadnt mastered it properly.
The 34-year-old was worried she would let the movie down, but revealed she also works best when petrified of failure.
"It's a weird thing, you sign up to do a film and you don't know if you can find the character. I remember being in Kenya and it was a week before shooting, and I still hadn't nailed the accent. I was having a breakdown and I kept thinking, 'Am I ever going to get her?' But eventually she came, she revealed. "With any great part you think, 'I've bitten off more than I can chew.' And honestly, if you don't get that moment, then it wasn't really stretching you." (C) Cover Media
