Natalie Wood's death remains accidental'

19th November 2011

Natalie Wood's death is still being considered accidental, authorities declare.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department has reopened the inquiry into actress Wood's 1981 death by drowning due to new information. In a press conference held Friday, officials said the case is still being treated as an accidental drowning but did not provide further details on the inquiry.

Authorities did not reveal who they may interview in relation to their investigation.

The actress was found dead during a yacht trip off the coast of California with her husband Robert Wagner and her co-star Christopher Walken from the 1983 released film Brainstorm.

Walken has spoken previously about his lack of knowledge about what happened that night.

"Anybody there saw the logistics - of the boat, the night, where we were, that it was raining - and would know exactly what happened," Walken told Playboy Magazine in a 1997 feature. "What happened that night only Wood knows, because she was alone. She had gone to bed before us, and her room was at the back. A dinghy was bouncing against the side of the boat, and I think she went out to move it. There was a ski ramp that was partially in the water. It was slippery I had walked on it myself. She had told me she couldn't swim; in fact, they had to cut a swimming scene from Brainstorm. She was probably half asleep, and she was wearing a coat."

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that police officials have ruled out Walken as a suspect of any wrongdoing in the case.

Deputies officially confirmed at the press conference yesterday that Wood's husband Wagner is not a suspect.

Walken has reportedly hired former federal prosecutor turned civil entertainment litigator Mathew Rosengart to advise him on this matter.

Walken is expected to fully cooperate with authorities should deputies decide to interview him during their probe.

Wood is best known for her roles in West Side Story and Rebel Without a Cause. She received three Oscar nominations during her career.

The actress passed away at the age of 43.
