Ricky Gervais tones down for Globes

16th January 2012

Ricky Gervais was jokingly challenged by Madonna at yesterday's 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards.

Sunday was the third time the British comedian has hosted the prestigious Hollywood ceremony. Last year he caused outrage by poking fun at many of the A-list stars in attendance.

Ricky didn't disappoint this year, although he did tone down his quips considerably. One of the casualties on the funnyman's list was superstar Madonna, who took to the stage to announce the winner of the best foreign language film.

Ricky introduced the star saying she was still "like a virgin" in reference to her hit song. However, Madonna didn't hold back with her response when she appeared on stage.

"If I'm just like a virgin Ricky why don't you come over here and do something about it," she chimed, before adding, "I haven't kissed a girl in quite a few years, at least not on TV".

The 53-year-old songstress was referring to the famous kiss she shared with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2003.

Ricky joked about a number of celebrities in his opening monologue. Within a few minutes of being on stage, the star had made fun of the length of Kim Kardashian's 72-day marriage.

"The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. Bit louder. Bit trashier. Bit drunker. And more easily bought...allegedly," he quipped.

Ricky made tongue-in-cheek comments about Jodie Foster's directorial project The Beaver, starring Mel Gibson.

"I haven't seen it myself. I've spoken to a lot of guys here, they haven't seen it either. But that doesn't mean it's not any good," he joked.

The host also praised last year's hit movie Bridesmaids, causing a ripple of giggles when he joked about who it was based on.

"Farting, burping, cursing, performing wild sex acts, even pooping in the sink. I heard for research they spent the weekend with Dame Helen Mirren. She's got good PR but she is off the rails," he laughed.

Ricky's jokes were considerably less offensive than last year's, when he caused a stir with his controversial comments. He famously poked fun at Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp's movie The Tourist and also joked about Scientology.

He also quipped about people knowing Robert Downey Jr. mostly because of his trips to rehab and jail.

The British star was pleased with how the ceremony went, although he's insisted he won't be coming back next year.

"The crowd was with me this time. They went where I went. It's like they were ready for me this time and it felt pitch-perfect," he told Deadline.

"I'm really done this time. It's enough. Three is plenty - at least that's what Charlie Sheen told me."
