Russell Brand turned himself into police custody today after a warrant was issued for his arrest.

TMZ reports that the British comic star allegedly snatched a paparazzo's mobile phone and threw it into the window of a law firm as he was walking down a street in New Orleans, Louisiana.

After a police report was filed, The New Orleans Police Department quickly issued a warrant for Russell's arrest on the charges of misdemeanour criminal damage to property.

Russell turned himself into police late in the afternoon Thursday.

The actor is currently on hold and will be released once a $5000 jail bond has been paid in full.

Damages to the law firm's window totaled to nearly $250.

The actor reportedly sent a production assistant to drop off the money for the window's repair.

Russell was in New Orleans filming a movie.

The star, who split from wife Katy Perry late last year, didn't believe he did anything criminal.

"Since Steve Jobs died I cannot bear to see anyone use an iphone irreverently, what I did was a tribute to his memory. (sic)" Russell posted on his Twitter account earlier this week in reference to the event.

No official word has been issued from Russell or his representatives concerning the matter.
