(Cover) - EN Movies - Super 8 has reached the number one spot at the US box office.

The retro sci-fi thriller, starring Jessica Tuck, Elle Fanning and Joel Courtney, made a strong screen debut despite a comparatively small launch in America.

The summer blockbuster raked in $38million on its debut weekend, with around $1million coming from early sneak' previews and midnight viewings.

Directed by Star Trek filmmaker J.J. Abrams and produced by Steven Spielberg, the movie is expected to attract large audiences around the globe.

Takings for X-Men: First Class dropped by a hefty 54% but still managed to come in at second place with $25 million, bringing its figures to a total US gross of $98.8 million.

The Hangover 2 also suffered a slight dip, raking in $18.5 million, but still managed a respectable third place. The comedy sequel starring Bradley Cooper and Zach Galifianakis has so far earned an impressive total of $216.5 million.

Kung Fu Panda 2 dropped down to fourth place with $16.3 million, while Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides closed the top five with takings of $10.8 million. (C) Cover Media
