The actress who was nominated for best supporting actress at last nights Academy Awards wowed on the red carpet in a stunning purple L'Wren Scott gown.

But the jaw-dropping part of her attire was her emerald and diamond Cartier jewellery, reportedly worth $1.35 million.

The 36-year-old actress wore a Cartier platinum and diamond Haute Joaillerie secret watch bracelet which featured a 30.75-carat carved emerald and 575 diamonds, worth $1.025 million. The pretty actress also wore a pair of platinum and diamond 2-carat stud earrings, worth $35,000 and a Cartier platinum and diamond necklace with carved 33.24-carat emerald, worth $290,000, according to a press release from the jeweller.

Meanwhile, Helena Bonham Carter wore a surprisingly toned down dress on the red carpet. The actress wore a demure-looking black silk taffeta gown with a velvet bodice and Elizabethan style cutaway sleeves.

Helena is known for her quirky dress sense and had forecast whatever she wore to the Academy Awards this year could be "catastrophic".

At the Golden Globes she was famously criticised for her choice of attire. The actress wore a multi-hued Vivienne Westwood gown accessorised with one red shoe and one green.

The 44-year-old actress who walked the carpet with her director partner Tim Burton - admitted her more conservative choice of gown was because she wanted to keep the nights focus on celebrating film.

"I got together with our costume designer Colleen Atwood and thought it would be nice to celebrate film not fashion, she told Ryan Seacrest for E!.

Pretty pastel colours and bold red designs were the biggest trends last night. Stunning actresses Cate Blanchett, Halle Berry and Mila Kunis all stuck to a delicate pale palette.

Scarlett Johansson, Sandra Bullock and Oscars host Anne Hathaway wore daring red gowns on the awards carpet. Stunning Penelope Cruz also wowed in a sequined L'Wren Scott red gown that showed off her post-pregnancy curves to perfection.

Best actress winner Natalie Portman elegantly dressed her bump in flowing plum-coloured Rodarte, and accessorised her beautiful outfit with loose side-sweeping wavy hair. (C) Cover Media
