Sirish Bhardwaj, the son-in-law of actor-turned-politician Chiranjeevi, on Wednesday surrendered before a local court, after evading arrest for over four months in a dowry harassment case. The additional chief metropolitan magistrate sent Sirish to judicial custody till August 8th. Sirish was later sent to the Chanchalguda jail.
Sirish's estranged wife Srija, who is Chiranjeevi's youngest daughter, had accused him and her in-laws of harassing her for dowry. The couple had married against the wishes of Srija's family in 2007 and they have a two-year-old daughter.
Though the elders of both the families tried to find an amicable settlement, their efforts failed, as Srija was determined to get divorced. She has been staying at the residence of her father after her relationship with Sirish soured.
The Supreme Court had rejected Sirish's anticipatory bail plea in May and advised him to surrender before a local court and seek a regular bail after arrest.
