Daniel Radcliffe: I dont care about awards

11th May 2011

(Cover) - EN Movies - Daniel Radcliffe says the reaction to him not receiving a Tony Award nomination was over the top.

The 21-year-old British actor is best known for portraying the title character in the hugely successful Harry Potter film franchise, although he has been expanding his repertoire recently by appearing in the Broadway musical How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.

The star has received rave reviews for his performance where he reveals his singing and dancing talent so it came as a surprise when he didnt receive a nomination for the 65th Annual Tony Awards, which will honour achievement in Broadway theatre next month.

The thing that shocked me was everybody elses reaction to me, and how they started treating me because it was like I lost a relative, he told Entertainment Weekly. In my opinion, it was sweet, but over the top.

People would ask me, Are you okay? And Id go, Im really okay!

Actors who did receive nods for their theatre roles include Tony Sheldon for Priscilla Queen of the Desert and Andrew Rannells for The Book of Mormon. Despite acknowledging the prestige of awards, Daniel believes - like many actors - that it is wrong to focus on critical acclaim and accolades.

I think I speak for 99 percent of actors when I say that the reason we do this job, while its lovely to get recognised by your peers, its not the reason why we do it, said the star.

The people that do this job for awards and recognition are kind of worshipping at the wrong altar, and Im not really quite sure if I want to know those people. (C) Cover Media
