Mel Gibson settles custody case

27th August 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Mel Gibson and his ex-lover have reached a custody agreement over their daughter.

The Hollywood actor and his former partner Oksana Grigorieva have been locked in a dispute about 22-month-old Lucia for months. They argued about the financial aspect of raising the tot as well as how often each should see her.

Last night, The Public Information Office of the Los Angeles Superior Court confirmed they have now reached a settlement.

"As the result of a multi-day settlement conference, the Court announces that Mel Gibson and Oksana Grigorieva have achieved a settlement in their on-going dispute," a statement read

"The terms and conditions of the settlement will be set for hearing on Wednesday August 31, 2011... Matters concerning the civil financial agreement will be heard in open court before Judge Peter D. Lichtman. Custody issues will be heard in a closed session."

Mel's spokesperson Alan Nierob said the actor was grateful to the judge for helping an agreement be made.

The pair have been in court a number of times due to the case. Mel reportedly wanted them to equally share custodial rights over Lucia. However, Oksana was said to be "vehemently opposed" to Mel having 50 per cent custody.

Mel and Oksana made their first public appearance together in April 2009, but a year later the relationship was over. The split was acrimonious, with Oksana accusing Mel of violence.

The actor pleaded no contest to misdemeanour battery charges in March this year. He had to undergo counselling and was also sentenced to community service.

Recordings of Mel allegedly using racist and violent language were also leaked. (C) Cover Media
