Ricky Gervais adjusts to celebrity status

13th November 2011

Ricky Gervais says he has learnt to "cope" with fame.

The star shot to fame in UK television comedy The Office, which he co-wrote and starred in as desperate boss David Brent.

Ricky admits that he used worry about his public persona.

"I'm coping with it better now," he said in an interview with new! magazine. "At first I dreaded it I didn't want to be lumped into the same category as those people who just want fame."

However, he believes celebrities must retain some privacy for themselves. Ricky doesn't approve of famous people who talk about their children in the press.

"You can't sell every salacious detail of your life and then complain about things particularly the people who do it with their kids," he exclaimed. "They'll do anything for a column inch."

Ricky has no plans to leave show business yet.

The 50-year-old's latest TV venture is sitcom Life's too Short.

The BBC comedy written by Ricky and long-time collaborator Stephen Merchant follows 3ft 6in Warwick Davis going about his daily life.

Ricky plans to keep going with comedy for as long as he feels inspired. He admits creating new work is a strong desire of his.

"I couldn't [retire]," he added. "When I have a day off I think of three new ideas that I want to do."
