The singer songwriter met Elton on a music show in 2002. The music legend revealed that he was a huge fan of Ryan's first solo album Heartbreaker and it inspired his writing on Songs from the West Coast.

The two went on to perform together on TV show CMT Crossroads, but the relationship later turned sour.

Ryan admits that he was to blame and regrets his behaviour towards the iconic musician.

"That guy is like a shaman, he is like a sorcerer, the good wizard, one of the deepest people you can meet in music," Ryan told British newspaper The Times. "But the honest truth is that he was at one point concerned for where I was headed. I was having a bad time romantically, I was having a hard time writing, he came out of the clouds, checked in on me and I barked at him. I alluded to him in a very hurtful way, said I was enjoying it down there in the unfathomable darkness. It was a really sh**ty thing to do."

This incident occurred while Ryan was involved with substance abuse.

He has since cleaned up his act and doesn't even drink alcohol any more. His change of ways has also allowed him to develop a strong romantic relationship with singer-and-actress Mandy Moore, who Ryan married in 2009.

"I don't even have a desire to drink any more. When I was done, I was done, I was tired of feeling like sh*t I was actually pretty allergic to it, my eyes would always itch," he added.

The British singer has also made up with Elton. The pair are now on good terms and Ryan is relieved he was able to redeem himself.

"He rang and we had a conversation and it was a very redemptive, beautiful thing," he smiled. "Some people need some time to be in the dark." (C) Cover Media
