Soon as the 'Udta Punjab' trailer was released, it started trending on the social networking sites and was considered to be the biggest hit. It received more than 1.1 crore hits on YouTube a week ago. 'Udta Punjab' which highlights the issue of drug abuse in Punjab has now got into trouble with the Censor Board of Film Certification(CBFC) which refused the certification due to the overuse of abusive language.
The decision of CBFC came after almost a week later when Punjab's Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) expressed their anger over the portrayal of Punjabis in the film. "We have just held back the certification. The film producers have the option to move Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT). It is only about certain expletives and nothing more," said a senior CBFC official.
The other political parties like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress are targeting SAD as their assembly polls are just round the corner. SAD MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha also stated that they would welcome the movie if it does not portray Punjabis in bad language. "Our concern is only about the politics that is being played out over the film's trailer. But if AAP or Congress wants to use it as a political agenda, then we won't allow them to do so. Where do such problems like drug abuse not occur? The drug crisis is as bad in the United States or Europe. Drugs are sold there. We are trying to curb the problem. We don't want to stop the movie screening and we will not," he added.
Now all we have to do is just wait for the next move from the CBFC or the makers of the film.
