Ricky Gervais: I'll be a wolf at Globes

12th January 2012

Ricky Gervais is gearing up to be a "wolf in wolf's clothing" at the Golden Globe Awards.

Sunday will be the third time the British comedian has hosted the prestigious ceremony. Last year he caused outrage by poking fun at many of the celebrities in attendance.

The star has promised things won't be any different this time around.

"They're the wealthiest, most privileged people in the world," he told Esquire magazine. "Offense is taken, not given.

"Imagine if I had gone out there and said, We're all in the same gang. Aren't we brilliant? Us millionaires together' I'm not a wolf in sheep's clothing. I'm a wolf in wolf's clothing."

Ricky hopes his presenting style will resonate with the celebrities who attend. He fears some take themselves too seriously, which is what he is railing against.

"There was a Roman emperor who hired someone to whisper, You're just a man,' in his ear as he walked around the crowds," he explained. "Just to remind him, because he knew if everyone tells you, you're a god, then you are. And so he hired someone to say, You're just a man.'"

The star is happy with what happened last year and plans to make the 2012 ceremony even better. He isn't sorry about any of his jokes and blames the way people reacted on a change within Hollywood circles.

"I stand by everything. You can apologise for things you do when you're 15, but not when you're 50," he said. "I think Hollywood's gotten more reactionary and conservative over the years, because there's no longer art in Hollywood."

While presenting last year, Ricky famously poked fun at Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp's movie The Tourist and also joked about Scientology.

He also quipped about people knowing Robert Downey Jr. mostly because of his trips to rehab and jail. The comments prompted the actor to take a stand. "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited, with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show is pretty good so far, wouldn't you?" Robert said.

He later added: 'I think it's great to be funny, but it's better if you can do it without hurting people."
